The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has released new preliminary flood maps for Hudson, Monmouth, Ocean and Atlantic counties, which replace the Advisory Base Flood Elevation (ABFE) maps. The new maps reflect a more precise analysis of current flood hazards, and a more detailed study of other specific conditions that could affect flood risk. Revision of these maps is an ongoing process that will lead to the final Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRM). The new preliminary flood maps are not final and will be revised by FEMA before being approved either in 2014 or 2015.
Under the revised preliminary maps, the number of properties in V zones has been substantially decreased in these maps as opposed to the ABFE maps. According to FEMA, the number of V zones was decreased by 80 percent in Atlantic County, 76 percent in Hudson County, 46 percent in Monmouth County and 45 percent in Ocean County.
